Property Flood Damage: A Step-by-Step Guide to a Successful Claim

17 February 2025

A Checklist to Help Get Your Insurance Claim Approved

Recent extreme weather events serve as a stark reminder of the critical importance of preparation, robust insurance coverage, and proactive measures in mitigating the consequences of extreme weather.

This checklist will help you and your clients navigate the claims process more effectively, facilitating a smoother recovery from the impacts of flood damage:

1. Notify the Insurance Company Immediately

Contact the insurer ASAP to inform them of the flood damage and the possibility of a claim. For large claims, consider involving a loss assessor.

    2. Document the Damage

Take clear photographs and videos of affected areas and damaged items. Keep samples of carpets or furnishings to support your claim.

        3. Secure the Property

If safe to do so, prevent further damage by boarding up broken windows or arranging for emergency repairs. Consult your insurer before major repairs – and keep receipts!

          4. Keep Records of Communication

Log of all communications with your insurer, including dates, times, and summaries of discussions in case disputes arise.

            5. List Damaged Items

Create a detailed inventory of damaged belongings, including descriptions, approximate values, and purchase receipts if available, to speed up the claim.

              6. Understand Your Policy

Review the insurance policy to understand coverage limits, exclusions, and the claims process. Set realistic expectations.

                7. Don’t be pressured to accept the first offer insurers make

If the scope of work or cash settlement amount offered by the insurer is inadequate, seek expert advice, reports or alternative quotes.

                  8. You can use your own contractor

Clients can usually choose their own preferred contractor, but all quotes must be insurer-approved before they start work. Find a contractor with experience of property insurance claim processes, as it minimises delays.

If the worst happens, this checklist will smooth the property insurance claim process following flood damage to your or your client’s property.
